“Sergeant First Class Asher James stared at Captain Phillip Newell, sure that he’d heard wrong.”
Opening line of “Collateral Damage” by Lynette Eason
“Collateral Damage” by Lynette Eason is the start of her new Danger Never Sleeps series. With a cast of current and former military characters, the reader travels the world in this one!
From the first page, this book had me hooked as the action unfurled and I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Our leading lady, Brooke, decides to transition back to civilian life as she deals with her PTSD from the bomb blast which sets the stage of the mystery element of the story. Our leading man, Asher, is searching for help with his PTSD and Brooke is the only counselor he has connected with in the past. I found both of them easy to relate to and engaging!
What should have been a routine appointment spins out of control as the pair find Brooke’s assistant dead and realise she was the intended target! Asher comes alongside Brooke to unscramble the past, work out who is chasing her in the present and why.
Several other interesting characters are part of the story and I can’t wait to read book two to see how this adventure continues.
It is a five out of five on the enJOYment scale and highly recommended!
From the back cover:
Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others–but her days of helping military personnel are over. She’s got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she’s not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way–terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.
Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn’t there–but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can’t take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he’s not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.
When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack–and that her secrets go even deeper than his own–Asher vows to protect her no matter what.
