Rock Harbor is becoming a favourite place for me to visit! This is the second book I’m reading in this series, though it’s number six, and I loved it start to finish. Colleen Coble weaves a story so believable and tense I read it straight through, cover to cover! Upon reading the back cover, I presumed the story would focus on the abusive fiancé, but the web woven is so much broader and more intriguing. The collision of past and present takes a twist I didn’t see coming (I love it when I can’t predict a thriller) and the ending is perfect!

The familiarity of characters from Haven of Swans gives the reader a set of trustworthy characters and a chance to see the normal life version of Dana. Boone has his own baggage and the way the two of them work through their past pain is brave and a reminder that we choose how much influence our past has on our behaviour today and how we respond to what life challenges us with. From the perspective of relying on God to be our reference point and strength, Christianity is threaded gently through the book and placed in stark contrast to those who abuse, manipulate and injure others.

Whether this is the continuation of the series for you or the first book you’ve picked up, I highly recommend it with a 5 out of 5 on the en-JOY-ment scale. I hope Colleen Coble continues to write about Rock Harbor!

From the back cover:

Dana has already learned that love isn’t safe . . . but could it be different in Rock Harbor? As a 911 dispatcher, Dana Newell takes pride in being calm in tough circumstances. In addition to her emotionally-charged career, she’s faced enough emergencies in her own life. She recently escaped her abusive fiancé to move to tranquil Rock Harbor where she hopes life will be more peaceful.

But the idyllic town hides more danger and secrets than it first appeared. Dana is continually drawn to her new friend Boone, who has scars inside and out. Then she answers a call at her job only to hear a friend’s desperate screams on the other end. Soon the pain in her past collides with the mysteries of her new home—and threatens to keep her from the future she’s always wanted.
